The construction sector is undergoing a major transformation. As Europe advances towards climate neutrality and more resource-efficient models, rethinking how we design, build, and reuse our built environment is essential. This is the ambition behind REVAIL (REclaiming building products for increasing the Value of materials through their re-Assembly and Integration in buildings’ retrofit through new circuLar business models), a new EU-funded project pioneering circular construction and the reuse of building components across Europe.

REVAIL tackles one of the sector’s key challenges: reducing construction waste while unlocking the value of existing materials. By enabling the safe reclaiming, disassembly, and reassembly of timber, aluminium, and ceramic tile components, the project aims to transform building renovation and keep valuable resources in circulation.

Through digital exchange platforms, advanced disassembly techniques, and design-to-fabrication tools, REVAIL will make material reuse more accessible and scalable. Its solutions will be validated through four regional pilot value chains in Italy, Poland, France, and Greece, where reclaimed components will be tested for technical performance, environmental impact, durability, and social value.

By bringing together industry, academia, and communities, REVAIL will develop new circular business models and demonstrate how material reuse can support more sustainable, resilient, and culturally meaningful buildings, aligned with the values of the New European Bauhaus.

Science For Change: connecting innovation with people, communities, and impact

Science For Change (SFC) plays a central role in REVAIL as the leader of the Dissemination and Communication (D&C) work package, ensuring that the project’s knowledge, results, and opportunities are shared effectively with stakeholders across Europe.

However, communication is only one part of SFC’s mission within the project. The team also supports REVAIL’s engagement and co-creation activities, creating spaces where different voices, experiences, and perspectives can contribute to shaping the project’s outcomes. By bringing together researchers, professionals, communities, and other relevant actors, SFC helps ensure that circular construction solutions are developed with a strong connection to real needs and everyday realities.

Through participatory approaches, SFC explores the relationships between innovation, cultural significance, and social impact. The team works to understand how reclaimed materials and new circular practices can contribute not only to more sustainable buildings, but also to places that reflect the values, identities, and priorities of the people who use them. By placing collaboration and dialogue at the centre of the project, SFC helps REVAIL move beyond technological innovation and towards solutions that are inclusive, meaningful, and capable of generating long-term value for society.

A shared vision begins: REVAIL Kick-Off Meeting in Copenhagen

The REVAIL journey officially began with its Kick-Off Meeting, held in Copenhagen on 30 September and 1 October, bringing together project partners from eight different European countries for two days of collaboration, exchange, and shared planning.

The meeting marked the first milestone in a collective effort to accelerate circular construction practices across Europe. Partners discussed the project’s objectives, methodologies, and implementation strategy, creating a strong foundation for cooperation between research organisations, industry actors, and innovation experts.

On the second day of the event, the Science For Change team facilitated a dedicated co-creation workshop focused on exploring relevant project connections, identifying key findings, and understanding the needs that will guide future activities. The workshop provided a dynamic space for partners to exchange perspectives, strengthen collaboration, and reflect on the social dimensions that will contribute to REVAIL’s success.

The Copenhagen meeting was not only the starting point of a three-year journey, but also an opportunity to build a shared commitment towards a more circular, resilient, and sustainable construction sector.
