The study of the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda, contracted Science for Change and carried out in collaboration with the Commission for the Promotion of Citizen Science and Nature (CICCNA), aims to analyse the current state of citizen science and nature projects in Catalonia in order to identify opportunities for improvement where support can be provided (through future funding, training and/or other channels).

Project challenge

Over the last few years, a greateffort has been devoted at the European level both to systematise and protocolise citizen science and to demonstrate its capacity to inform public policy and strengthen its link to decision-making. These efforts are particularly intense in the field of nature monitoring and conservation.

In line with European work, Catalonia has also demonstrated the willingness of the public administration to exploit the potential of citizen science in the field of nature monitoring and conservation. One example is the report State of Nature in Catalonia 2020 or the creation of the Commission for the promotion of citizen science and nature (CICCNA), led by the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda. In order to be able to carry out specific actions from the public administration that respond to the challenges of citizen science in the field of nature, an analysis of the state of the art of the sector is essential. Given this need, the Diagnosis and manual of good practices on citizen science and nature projects in Catalonia was born.

Results

The main results of the project are the analysis of the state of the art of the citizen and natural science ecosystem in Catalonia, a guide of good practices and the identification of future lines of work to improve the sector. In addition, *Science for Change will hold working sessions with the Virtual Showcase projects to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and limitations in the areas where the greatest challenges have been detected. The sessions will also allow us to define possible actions for improvement and possible lines of support from the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda.
